Blog Post 10: Barn Conversion - The ‘Unknown Unknowns’

February 2023 - I’ll start with the good news … Alan Dawson: Adaptahaus is making speedy progress with my stairs :-)

That rectangle at the front of the image is my half-landing.

This is them on their way to be powder coated in Carlisle.

(Shout out to Dave and Les who have built the stairs with Alan)

The less good (trying to stay positive) thing is that the ‘unknown unknowns’ are beginning to reveal themselves :-(

The slope of the roof in both of the ensuite has caused issues … something minor in the main bedroom ensuite which necessitated a pragmatic repositioning of the shower head …

Main bedroom ensuite.

… but something more major in the guest bedroom ensuite that is going to require some thinking about.

There is limited space for the guest ensuite shower tray - the shower cubicle space is bang on 900mm x 900mm and the shower door is 2000mm high - normally there would not be any issue with that … but … the slope in the roof means the height door just won’t fit.

To make it work I need a 1850mm high, black, hinged shower door with an in-line panel … the problem is I’ve been unable to find one … so it looks like I might have to find some way of ‘notching’ a small bit of the shower door into the ceiling … those bloomin’ unknown unknowns :-(

Applying the ‘good news sandwich’ approach - another piece of good news is that the retained exposed stone wall on the half-landing is looking good thanks to Dave my builder’s sterling efforts …
